This is one Christmas gift I wouldn’t mind finding under the tree
I’m a fan of adventure games, but I always have a lot of trouble finishing them. It seems like I can never tap into the wave of logic that the game’s creator wants me to ride. The two exceptions to that are the Gobliiins games and Sam & Max. I’m pleased to say that trend continues with the first episode of Sam & Max Season 2, Ice Station Santa.
Ice Station Santa picks up right where Season 1 left off, and gets even more ridiculous. In this episode, Sam & Max are immediately attacked by the Maimtron, a robotic killing machine from Season 1, and from there they start a brief but hilarious ride that eventually finds them at The North Pole struggling to save Christmas and the world.
There are a few new environments on Sam & Max’s street, such as a garage run by C.O.P.S., the organization of intelligent yet antiquated computers, and Stinky’s, a disgusting local diner that features a rigged trivia contest and a haughty proprietress. It was nice to see TellTaleGames actually bother to add some original content on Sam & Max’s street instead of just phoning it in again. TellTale’s excellent sense of humor shines forth yet again; the Sam & Max games are among the very select group of titles that can reduce me to uncontrollable fits of laughing and giggles, and this title is no exception. The puzzles are excellent as well. While a couple are a little obtuse, most of them are just challenging enough to require some thought without just handing you the solution, and that’s really how it should be.
There’s very little I can find wrong with this title. I will say though that it is an adventure game, so if that’s not your cup of tea, then I’d move along. Also, I could see how someone else might find some of the humor a bit gross and sophomoric, but I loved it. Pick this title up, you won’t be disappointed.
