If you have a Playstation 3, you need this game

Open world games seem to be everywhere these days, and most of them aren’t that good.  However, I’m pleased to say that InFamous is not on that list.

InFamous follows the story of Cole, a former delivery boy in the metropolis of Empire City that survives a catastrophic explosion only to find himself isolated in a quarantined city suffering from gang attacks and plagues.  To top this all off, apparently the explosion has given Cole lightning-based superpowers.  Throughout the story, you explore more of the game’s three islands while interacting with a host of heroes and villains.

Ok, now that that’s out of the way, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty.  This game is really good.  It’s the kind of quality title that only comes along once, maybe twice in a console’s life.  The game’s story is amazing; it seems totally run-of-the-mill and droll until about 4-5 hours in, where the story literally backhands you so hard that I was left stunned.  Add to this an ending that literally blew me a way in a way I haven’t been for literally a decade, and it makes for an amazing ride.  Even if the rest of this game was total garbage, I would still recommend it just for the story.  It’s just that good.

However, the rest of the game isn’t garbage, it’s actually quite amazing.  The music and sound is fabulous, and the game itself it a beautiful experience.  The world gets either darker or brighter as you play to reflect the moral path you are choosing in the game, and the character’s conversations and the cutscenes change as well, to the point where it allmost feels like two games depending on which side you’re playing.  Some of the powers are truly satisfying, and the platforming reflects the pedigree of the game’s study, which is the people that brought us the Sly Cooper series of games.

There are very few flaws in this game that I can think of, but there are a couple.  The controls, particularly the aiming system, seemed a little clunky to me and took some getting used to, but by the time I reached the end of the first island, I was comfortable with it.  Also, the difficulty on some of the side missions seems to fly wildly back and forth from mind-numbingly easy to insanely hard.

But these are nits I’m picking.  If you have a Playstation 3, you need this game.  If you don’t have a Playstation 3, you need to get one so you can play this game.  It is one of the best games I’ve played this generation, and it should not be missed.
