Oh Peter Molyneux…he tries so hard, yet always falls a bit short. The man does truly believe in his work, though. It’s just sad that no one else seems to. So here we have his latest offering: Fable 2.

While the game might not live up to all the hype that Molyneux gave it, there is no denying that the game is fun. I had a blast playing through it. It wasn’t really that long of a game, but it was still a good ride while it lasted.

I wasn’t all that impressed with the first Fable. It was fun, but there was just something about it that I didn’t really care for. I think it was the fact that being good or evil didn’t really have much impact on the story. All the changes were merely cosmetic.  At least in Fable 2 it seems that some of your decisions do effect how certain parts of the game play out. Maybe not the main plot, but some sub-plots and a couple villages might be effected.

The game takes place about 500 years after the first Fable. There are some slight allusions to the first game, but it’s not necessary to play the first one before playing Fable 2. Gameplay is very similar to the first game.

It’s an action RPG where you get a nameless character who is supposed to be you, I guess. One big change from the first game is that you can have a male or female character. People only refer to you by what your title is. You buy titles from the Town Crier in certain towns. Just like any other RPG out there, you kill enemies to get experience points. When you get enough you can put the points into either Strength, Skill, or Will (Magic) abilities.

Strength obviously helps you in melee combat, making you stronger or more resistant to damage. It also gives you special melee abilities, like block and counter. Skill is for ranged combat and speed. It makes you better at using guns, and your melee swings faster. All the abilities are focused on shooting, though.

As for Will, it’s all about magical attacks. Magic is kinda strange in this game. You don’t have MP, or anything that drains when you use magic. Instead it just has a charge time. The longer you hold down the casting button the stronger the spell will be, assuming you have higher ranks in the spell. I really didn’t care for the way magic works in this game, so I mostly avoided it.

Instead, my character went sort of a “gentleman duelist” route. He wore a fancy tailed coat with tri corner hat and used a saber and dueling pistol. It was a pretty effective style, and very fun to play as well. He also went the pure good route.

There are actually two stats in Fable 2 that tell how good or evil you are. The normal alignment stat, like in the original Fable, and the purity stat which tells how pure or corrupt you are. So it’s possible to be a good character that’s corrupt. I don’t know how that works, but there it is.

As the title says I also purchased some of the download content for Fable 2. I purchased both Knothole Island and See the Future. Of the two I found Knothole Island to be more enjoyable. When I first arrived there I thought “Wow, is this Fable 2’s version of Northrend?”  It certainly reminded me of it.

That was not the case, however.  It seems that Knothole island is having weather problems. The entire quest line revolves around going through dungeons to find artifacts that will normalize the weather on the island. It was kinda short, but still enjoyable.

See the Future wasn’t all that good in my opinion. I found the quests kinda dull, and in some cases down  right annoying,  such as the first quest where the enemies can only be hurt by certain things. Blue enemies are weak to physical attacks, yellow are weak to range, and red are weak to magic. Which is fine, unless you’re completely gimped in one area, like I was with magic. At the final quest you’re given a glimpse of what might be in store for future Fable games. Whoopee.

I will also say this, without trying to ruin anything. Fable 2 has the most anti-climatic final boss fight ever, If you can even call it a fight. But hey, it’s not always about the destination, it’s about the ride, right? In which case I’d say it was a fairly good one. Not sixty dollars good, but good none the less. I think the standard price now is forty dollars. I’d say it’s worth that. So yeah, give it a shot.
