Double Fine brings the Metal
Brutal Legend is one of those rare games that combines innovation with talented cast and developers and a killer soundtrack and graphics to bring a nearly perfect experience.
Brutal Legend follows the story of Eddie Riggs, roadie legend, who is teleported to another world, a world of Heavy Metal, to bring the power of the music of the Titans and fight for humanity's freedom from an oppressive demon emperor.
This game features some excellent talent. Some world famous voice actors such as Jack Black and Tim Curry perform voice work alongside famous musicians such as Rob Halford, Lemmy Kilmister, Kyle Gass, and Lita Ford. Almost all of these actors provide far more than just token cutscene appearances that so frequently occurs in most games. This game is fully voice acted. Jack Black, Rob Halford, and Lemmy Kilmister even provide background dialogue for the sections of the game that they appear in. The dialogue not only captures the heavy metal feel of the universe, but is also genuinely funny in many areas, a rare treat in a video game. Some of the speeches in the game also provide that ever-elusive moment where they both geniunely move you as a player and make you giggle a little at the same time.
I would be remiss if I did not mention this game's killer soundtrack. It does an excellent job of taking some of the best Heavy Metal spanning the entire history of the genre and inserting it at just the right moments, from the use of “Rock of Ages” for an attack on a prison to the dark slow creepy metal used for the journey through a dismal swamp towards the end of the game.
The story is also excellent, featuring all the good themes of a well-crafted plot. It manages to successfully tell a story in three acts without dragging in the middle, which makes for a great story. The character of Eddie Riggs is fully realized through a combination of excellent voice work by Jack Black and quality script writing.
I do have two problems with this game though. First, while the controls were very tight for most of the game, there were a couple moments when I struggled with them. Also, the game is very short. It can be played from start to finish in less than six hours. Its unfortunate, but since what is there is so good, I don't hold it against them.
You need to play this game. If you like Heavy Metal at all, then you really need to play it. Go buy it right the hell now.
