Dr. Wily still has ideas (sort of) for robot masters.
So...its Mega Man, what else can I say about it really? If you've played one, you've pretty much played them all, but is that really a bad thing? In this case, no it is not. Even after all these years of basically releasing the same game, Capcom still manages to make me excited for the release of a new Mega Man game.
When faced with bringing the Blue Bomber into the current generation Capcom decided, for whatever reason, to go back to his roots and make it look like an NES game. Whether this was a labor of love for the long time fans, or just Capcom being cheap, I wouldn't want Mega Man any other way. It feels like I have come home again, which is not always easy to do.
Like I said earlier, if you have played pretty much any of the other games in this series, you know what to expect here. There are eight robot masters that you can fight in any order, though its better to fight them in a specific order. This is because when you kill a boss robot, you get his power and one of the other robots will be weak against it. Then you have to fight Dr. Wily. Do not be deceived; its always Dr. Wily who's behind whatever the evil plot is, even when the game tells you it isn't.
Speaking of Dr. Wily...I don't wanna alarm anyone, but I think his mind might be going. Yeah he's a mad scientist, but I think age might have taken its toll on his brain. This latest batch of robot masters was bizarre to say the least. He of course has the staples of every robot master line-up, the fire and ice bots. Just had to break out the Thesaurus and find a word for fire and ice that he hadn't used yet.
There is also bomb guy, blade guy, fast guy , and of course water guy. Then there is Strike Man and Sheep Man. Really, though, they could just be considered ricocheting projectile guy and electricity guy. Even though their concepts are funny, its something that's been done before. But hey, no one who plays these games is looking for innovation; you're in it to whip some robot ass. In that area, the game definitely delivers.
If there is one tradition Mega Man games have always had, its that they separate the men from the boys. In other words, they can be incredibly difficult and in some cases down right frustrating! Mega Man 9 was this way, and apparently there was enough complaining from fans that Capcom put in an easy mode for Mega Man 10. I not ashamed to admit that I had no faith in my own abilities and used it. Easy mode really holds your hand; it reduces the number of enemies, and even puts platforms over quite a few pits. So I had no real trouble beating the game.
Also, right from the start you are given the choice of playing as Mega Man or Proto Man. Proto Man has more abilities at his disposal, such as a charge shot, a shield for deflecting projectiles, and the ability to slide. However, he can't take as much damage as Mega Man. Which makes playing as Proto Man somewhat more difficult. Also, Bass is available via DLC but I didn't purchase him so I can't comment as to how he works.
So while Mega Man 10 really offers nothing new to the franchise I can't really find any fault with that. It's just as much fun as every other game in the series. It's really difficult to find another video game series I could say that about. It really makes me hope that I hear about a Mega Man 11 sometime in the near future!
