Peg-Legged Exploding Ninja Demon Penguins

If you are new to the Disgaea series, then you'll instantly be lost if you read the title of this review. If you aren't then you know I am talking about the infamous PRINNY: Can I Really Be the Hero? on PSP. Prinnies are these wonderful demons born from the souls of thieves that look like blue peg-legged penguins with little bat wings, sound like low IQ surfers, fight like ninjas, and violently explode when exposed to even the slightest physical trauma, one of which you control in this game.

In PRINNY, your master Etna the Demon Queen's dessert has been stolen, so you must venture forth and cook for her the Ultra-Dessert. The ingredients are held by the most terrifying demons in all the underworld... well, beside Etna. In order to combat the fact you explode after being hit by even the fluffiest pillow; she bestows unto the first prinny in line the red hero scarf which allows him to be hit by three fluffy pillows before exploding. And yes, you guessed it: when the first prinny dies the scarf gets handed down to the next and so on.

Now you may be thinking: “hey this sounds like a really cool imaginative game”, and you'd be right. The graphics are good and the gameplay is solid. There is just one itsy-bitsy little tiny problem: the game is too hard. I'm not talking about Grand Theft Auto 4 hard, where you die three or four times a mission then you get it right. I'm talking Contra and Shinobi hard. There is a reason the designers give you a THOUSAND lives; the game is ball breaking hard. The first level is okay; I lost 10 lives tops including the boss fight, but then the difficulty curve ramps up 60 degrees. Level three alone took me 26 lives to get to the boss and additional 38 just to beat him. I tried to get through level four, three hours and 75 lives later I was in sight of the boss gate and I simply could not do it. I didn't even save, I just threw down my PSP in disgust and haven't touched it since. The game comes with the soundtrack and a Penny Arcade comic, but it's just not worth it. I got it on sale for twenty dollars and I regret paying that much let alone the forty dollars it currently retails for. Screw this game.
